My 5th newsletter has just been emailed to subscribers (Sept 2023)

It’s been pretty chaotic of the last couple of months, and at times it feels as though I’ve just been going around in circles. But things are starting to settle and I’ve finally got my 5th newsletter is out, with an update on what this author has been doing.

Summary

  • Nadir, Book 2 in the Clemhorn Trilogy was released at the end of July and the reviews were excellent. And I finally finished the Nadir book trailer.
  • Vortex on Vertu Prime, Book 3 in The Portal Adventures was also released on May 1 and I’m still smiling given the way reviewers received it.
  • Further to the above, Alan Malcolm, one of the narrators of  Nightfall is going to be narrating Vortex on Vertu Prime.
  • And The War of the Worlds in Real Time ran very successfully throughout June, despite Elon’s best attempts to bring Twitter to its knees. See followup interview on the SeaLionPress forum.
  • For more information, and a short piece of original prose from the upcoming For the Honor of the Agency, continue reading.
Coming Events
  • 24 October (Tuesday). The Bassendean Library is hosting a ‘Meet the author and narrators of the Nightfall – Audiobook’ event at 6:30 on the 24th of October.
  • I will have a stall at the Indi-Author Bookfair at the Sterling Street Arts Centre, Stirling St in Bunbury on Saturday 2 December from 10:00 to 16:00. It will be really cool to have people I know drop by and say hi.

‘Through the Dark Mirror’ review

Just saw the review by Alex Wallace on the @SeaLionPress site. Oh my goodness – thank you!

It’s a short review, only 407 words but it packs a punch. Here’s Alex’  concluding paragraph.

There is a quiet morality here, brave in a way that most alternate history simply refuses to be. It forces you to look at the butchery that underlies the pomp of flags and banners and uniforms. Through a kaleidoscopic view at so many different aspects of this contact, Harvey shows that when events shake the ground, the quakes destroy lives and societies. It is a bold statement, one that the genre needs all the more.

Interview with Gary Oswald for Sea Lion Press (11 March)

Yeah, I know its a bit late, but I was interviewed by Gary Oswald for his series on members of the Alternate History Community on the Sea Lion Press Forum way back on the 11th of March. The link is here.

The interview focussed on the following series of written questions – and if you want to read the answers you’ll need to read the interview.

  1. Hello Andrew, so first of all thank you very much for talking to us. You’re a passionate reader and writer of Alternate History, how did you get into the genre and what do you think appeals to you about it?
  2. Your first published story came out in 1992, what’s your opinion on the way the book industry has changed over the last 29 years due to the advent of e-books and the internet?
  3. You’re the current principle of Hague Publishing which publishes speculative work by authors from Australia and New Zealand, what books and authors should AH fans look out for from you?
  4. You used to be a literary agent and editor of magazines before taking over at Hague Publishing, what’s been the most rewarding and challenging parts of the switch to book publishing?
  5. What would your recommendations be for a new author who wants to get published?
  6. You’re currently working on the Clemhorn trilogy about war between Alternate timelines. Fantasy in the early 20th century was sometimes said to be split between portal fantasy as in Narnia, wherein worlds collide and so characters are introduced to new worlds with the reader and non portal fantasy, like Lord of the Rings, where the fictional world has no interaction with anything outside it. As someone whose written Alternate History with both concepts do you think that distinction is meaningful and what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of each type?
  7. The first book in that Trilogy, Nightfall, is undergoing the process of being made into an audiobook with local actors. What are the main challenges of that adaption?
  8. You’ve also written a number of short stories, including one for Sea Lion Press. Do you find yourself knowing the length a story is going to be when you plot it or do they sometimes grow, or shrink, in the writing so that a planned short story becomes a novel or vice versa?
  9. Alternate History is often divided between Writers who research and Historians who write, how much would you look into a time period before you write anything about it?
  10. Apart from the remaining books of the Clemhorn trilogy is there anything else new from you that we should look out for?

My short story ‘1827: Napoleon in Australia’ won a Tin Duck for best West Austn Professional Short Written Work

Certificate and prizeStill glowing that my short story from Sea Lion Press‘ ‘Alternate Australias’ anthology won a Tin Duck for the Best WA Short Written Work on Saturday. The Tin Ducks are the Western Australian SF achievement awards and voted on by members at the annual Swancon convention.

I need to specifically thank Coan for suggesting Napoleon for the subject, Jared Kavanagh who edited the anthology, Sea Lion Press who took the risk on the book, and everyone who voted. Thank You! And yes I am still doing the little happy dance in my head!

Further to this, my sincere congratulations to Amanda Bridgeman for beating me out for the Best Novel with her The Sensation (Salvation #2) (Best WA Long Written Work!) I’m still ecstatic that ‘Nightfall’ (Clemhorn #1) Zmok Books was on the shortlist! Also shortlisted in the Short Work category were my ‘Trouble on Teral’ and “Crisis at Calista Station’ Middle Grade Readers published by Peasantry Press.
